History
Twenties Group was formed in 1989 by a group of GLBT people interested in creating alternative avenues for meeting friends, activity partners and like-minded individuals. At the time there were few options outside of the traditional bar and clubbing scene for interacting with other GLBT people. The main focus of this group was to create a safe and secure environment for meeting new and interesting people. After nearly 17 years of activity, Twenties Group still has that interest as its main focus.
During the mid-1990s it became apparent that the interests of Twenties Group members were pretty strongly divided on gender lines. After a while the decision for the women to start their own group came about as a way to help both the male and female sides of the GLBT community strengthen their responses to their own communities. WITT, Women in their 20s, was born. WITT and Twenties Group do still collaborate on events and activities (occasional get-togethers and sharing of costs and booths at events and festivals, etc.), but the last ten years have seen a real strong surge in women-centered organizations in the DC area and across the country. We all see that as a good thing, and strive to support our sisters when possible.
Although our main purpose has not changed over the years of our history, our format and our meeting style probably has. We have been renting a room from a church for several years now (insert link to directions page), and have been enjoying each others' company over conversation and dinner. The original founders of the group have moved on to other things and have left us a pretty strong legacy of meaningful friendships and acquaintances. People often ask about what happens to members when they turn 30. No, they aren't kicked out of the group, but, like the original founders, they celebrate their birthdays surrounded by the friends they've made in the group and move on to other phases of their lives.
